Basque Tour was a success, now prep for the Amstel

Alberto clinched the overall victory and Roman, as the Tinkoff-Saxo captain, was satisfied with the performance that the team put in at the Basque Tour. He is now home gearing up to the Sunday Amstel Gold Race that he won last year.

“I came back from Spain, I took a day off the bike on Sunday and watched the Paris-Roubaix on TV. The next day I spun my legs on the home trainer and today I will do more intense training. The Basque Tour was quite demanding and I know I need to get some rest to be fresh for the next races.“

He finished in 17th place overall at the Tour of the Basque. “We are missing Rogers a little bit in races like this. He did the kind of job that I do now and I could stay around Alberto almost until the very end. With him not being on the team any more I have to do my work earlier and then my tank is empty in the crucial moments. But all in all, I think we showed a solid performance,” assessed Roman.

“As the team captain, I was in charge of keeping the team together and controlling the race. There were moments when I had to make a couple of things clear for our boys because from our part it was sometimes a bit chaotic. But we learnt from our mistakes and we are happy that Alberto took the overall victory. It wasn’t easy to control the race from the very first day until the finish,”
