Chilled to the bone…

romca newRoman abandoned the prestigious one-day classic Milan-San Remo. What was the reason? He didn’t have enough warm clothing on and suffered from the cold weather.

“These days simply happen and I am not the only one to suffer from the cold today,” said Roman after 294km of racing in the heavy rain and cold weather. “I made a mistake by not having enough clothing on. Halfway through the race on the Passo del Turchino climb I was wrapped up, then I took off a layer because the weather was supposed to get better. But it didn’t happen and, in the end, I was chilled to the bone. I reached the Cipresa climb and there I pulled out of the race together with a small group of riders,” Roman said.

The Norwegian Kristoff grabbed the victory, while the best Tinkoff-Saxo rider was Bennati in the 18th position. “I feel rather disappointed about having missed a possible chance for a good result. I am on good form at the moment and when I found out that Nibali attacked on his own on the Cipresa, I might have been able to ride with him and together we could have stayed clear and made the race more interesting. But, there is nothing I can do about it,” said Roman.

After having spoken to the team management Roman changed his plans the very evening following the race. “In the end, I will not go for an altitude training camp like I was planning to but I will be at the start of the Basque Tour.”
