Roman achieved his second best result in a one-day race in his professional career at the 45th edition of Amstel Gold Race. He finished in excellent fifth position.

He proved that his last year second place in San Sebastian wasn't a coincidence and that he is not to be underestimated at tough one-day races. Before the race La Fleche Wallone he showed to be in great form. 
”I am happy even though I was thinking about the podium towards the end. But my legs were stiff at that point. We didn’t even sprint, it was something like crawling into the finish,” Roman said. 
”At first I wasn't feeling good but the team did a great job for me and kept me sheltered, plus I rode the race for the fourth time so I knew where to move in the pack and when to hit the front. The only mistake I made was on the last climb when I was pedaling at a low cadence and when the attack came I could not speed up. But the outcome is good and I believe that either me or Nibali will make the podium in one of the remaining classics.” 
The Belgian Gilbert grabbed the victory after he launched an attack with 400 meters to go. ”I thought we would be able to bridge the gap up but everyone was worn-out. Gilbert earned it, he was the best one today. I wish him the victory because he is a good guy,” Roman added.
