Press conference in Prague

Tue June 23, 2009, 20:33

Today, a press conference with Roman has carried out in Prague. About 25 journalists from all the prestigious periodicals and television stations participated.

Roman arrived in Prague with his father and was answering the questions for almost two hours. He was talking about different topics but the most important was foremost this year Tour de France which starts on the 4th of July in Monaco. Here are some of Roman’s answers…

HOW LONG HE IS GOING TO STAY IN THE CZECH REPUBLIC
I have come for only two days to take care of some things and participate in this conference. I wanted to give space to the journalists so that they could interrogate me before the Tour because later I want to reduce the contact with them and focus on the preparation for the race itself.

WHY HE IS NOT GOING TO START AT THE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP
It simply doesn’t fit into my conception of the preparation for the Tour. The race takes place in Slovakia so I would be forced to travel a lot. And my training is planned in a different way. I am comming back to Italy where the weather is better. I am planning to do two hard trainings in the mountains, one on my time trial bike. It will be better for me to train without a race number.
Hopefully, everyone understands.

WHEN HE IS GOING TO THE TOUR
On Wednesday. Our program starts on Thursday there.

ABOUT HIS AMBITIONS
I would love to finish in top ten. I think that taking into account my last year result it is not unrealistic. Even though, it is going to be very tough since Astana didn’t take part in the last year Tour. And if I managed to win a stage that would be awesome.

WHICH RIDERS ARE ON THE ROSTER FOR THE TOUR FROM LIQUIGAS
Eight guys are sure so far. Besides me, the Italians Nibali, Bennati, Pellizotti, Sabatini, the Dane Vanborg, the Belgian Willems and the Belorussian Kucinskij. The last name is still in the air.

WHO IS GOING TO BE THE LEADER
Me and Nibali. He is also in great shape which he proved with seven place at the Dauphine Libére. I think we can help each other out. Along the race we will see how the things are going to turn out.

ABOUT HIS FORM
It is not the best so far but everything is timed so that my form should go up in the last week of the Tour.

ABOUT THE FAVORITES
The biggest is the Spaniard Contador. He is beyond the others. He has won all the famous races. And he is going to have all the great riders at hand: Armstrong, Klöden, Leipheimer. Astana should take control of the race and Saxo Bank with the Schlecks will probably join it. But we must count on Evans, Menshov or Sastre who are also contenders for the front positions.

ABOUT THE LIQUIGAS'S TACTICS
As for us, we are not definitely going to set the pace. But to a certain point, it can be our advantage to save energy sheltered in the peloton.
