Roman fought like a lion and he now sits in third

Even though the biggest favourites caught Roman´s group on the final ascent, he managed to keep up and help his leader Alberto Contador. Roman finished today in 13th position trailing 22 seconds behind the stage winner and he is currently holding third place in the general classification.

“After yesterday when we controlled the stage we wanted to have somebody up front in a breakaway group today. Before the stage we agreed that either Micheal Rogers or me would go for it. Rogers covered the first attack and as it did not work out he told me to try my luck,” he revealed

“Honestly, I was quite surprised to find out that they let us build such big a gap. I couldn’t believe it. When we caught the first group it was a strange race. There were many attacks and it was disorganized. Through radio I knew how quickly they were approaching us. When a group with Alberto got across we went full gas. Urán was missing in our group and even on the downhill we went full gas because every second counts, revealed Roman.

When their group had an advantage of 9 minutes with 60km he believed that it could work out. “I thought that they would never bridge up the gap but at the same time, I told myself that somebody would get nervous and take up the chase. I was not expecting that they would let me or Chavese reach the finish line with 6 minutes. Astana did a great job,” he admitted.

He now sits in third position in the general classification. “The most important thing is that we have not lost any time and escaped unscathed from the first stages. I have to admit that I can hardly remember riding such a difficult start of a Grand Tour. We ride full gas from start to finish and it is clear that this year Giro will be extremely hard.”
