Roman takes over race lead

Wed February 24, 2010, 18:39

Roman conquered the victory in the second stage of the Giro di Sardegna and became the new leader of the race.

"I am glad to make it. It is encouraging into other races. I knew that my condition was better than last year but the race itself proved so. Yesterday I let loose a bit and today I was feeling great. The team did a hell of a job, especially Nibali and Kiserlovski who were pushing hard on the last ascent," Roman said.
With the uphill finish Roman managed to outsprint Chris Horner from Team Radioshack. "At first it was very gradual but then it started to go up in the last six kilometers. I tried to attack several times but it did not work out because the climb was not particularly steep. There were seven of us and with 150m remaining I managed to launch the decisive attack. It was slightly uphill, which was my advantage. In addition, I had detailed information about the finish from the team, so I knew I would stand a chance," described the Liquigas rider after the stage, which was marked by rain-showers.
He was very happy about the victory but he overestimates the overall lead since the time gaps are insignificant. "Considering that the two most difficult stages are behind us, every second can be decisive. Both I and my team are satisfied but we will see how the race will unfold. If I managed to keep the overall lead that would be perfect. Tomorrow's stage is long and flat so there should be a bunch sprint."
Results – 2nd stage (Macomer-Nuoro, 172.6 km): 1st Roman Kreuziger (Cze/Liquigas-Doimo) 4:33:37, 2nd Horner (USA/Radioshack), 3rd Voeckler (Fra/Bouygues Telecom), 4th Caruso (Ita/Rosa-Stac Plastic), 5th Scarponi (Ita/Androni Giocattoli), 6th Brajkovič (Slo/Radioshack), 7st Niemiec (Pol/Miche).
Overall: 1st Roman Kreuziger 8:50:17, 2nd Horner +4, 3rd Voeckler +6, 4th Caruso, 5th Niemiec, 6th Brajkovič, 7th Scarponi all +10.
