Too bad: a failed breakaway

Thu March 25, 2010, 17:56

With 25 kilometers to go today's stage of the Tour of Catalan looked promising for Roman. He was in a breakaway with German Voigt and Estonian Taaramae but he lost contact on the last descent and the peloton caught him. Voigt and Taaramae kept their advantage and hit the finish line 34 seconds ahead of the peloton.

"I'm angry. We opened a gap on the last ten-kilometer ascent and had the advantage of over thirty seconds. But then on the descent I didn't take any risks and all of a sudden, I was behind about one hundred meters. We were doing seventy on the downhill but I wasn't able to close the gap. Then the bunch swallowed me up. I feel disappointed because 30 seconds would have helped me a lot in the GC. I suppose I should have taken more risks but I made another mistake instead," Roman said.
Roman remains in the eight position overall 1:22min behind the race leader Rodriguez. After the successful breakaway, Taaramae has moved up to the third position. "There is nothing I can do about it, I gave it a shot, at least and I proved to myself that I'm in good form. Today the pace was really high, the average speed after the first hour was 51. Tomorrow's stage is very tough so I would like to show my qualities," the Liquigas leader added.
4st stage (210 km): 1st Voigt (Ger/Saxo Bank) 4:43:28, 2nd Taaramae (Est/Cofidis), 3rd Voss (Ger/Milram), 4th Kreder (Ned/Garmin), 5th Marzano (Ita/Lampre), ... 33rd Roman Kreuziger (Cze/Liquigas-Doimo) +34.
Overall: 1st Rodriguez (Spa/Katusha) 13:48:14, 2nd Tondo (Spa/Cervélo) +10, 3rd Taaramae +46, 4th L. Sanchez (Spa/Caisse d’Epargne) +48, 5th Roche (Ir/AG2R), 6th Koren (Slo/Liquigas), 7th Hesjedal (Can/Garmin) +1:20, 8th Roman Kreuziger +1:22.
