My condolences to Weylandt´s family and his team

“My condolences go out to his family and the Leopard team. It is a huge loss for everyone and it will definitely affect the atmosphere of the whole race.”Weylandt was fatally injured in a crash on the downhill from the summit of Passo del Brocco with some 20km to go. The stage was won by the Spanish rider Vicioso. Roman finished in 43rd place and lost 21 seconds as well as his biggest rivals. “The downhill was very slippery. We were descending to the seaside and since it hadn’t rained for a long time the asphalt was very smooth. Sastre went down in front of me and then I played it rather safe even though it cost me a good position in the pack,” Roman described.“We didn’t know what had happened, we found out only at the finish. We were never on the same team but, still, he is a mate from the pack and his death is an awful tragedy. I´ve never ridden a race where somebody dies. I hope it´ll never happen again. It really is terrible news.”“That guy was two years older than me and all his career was ahead of him. When something like this happens then you realize the huge risk that we take on the roads every day. Aside from a helmet, we have nothing else to protect us on the bike.”
