Hunger-knock ruined my chances

“It was necessary to constantly replenish energy in such cold weather but I didn’t eat enough. Then I was on my limit out of the blue and couldn’t go on. It was a dumb mistake which a rider like me shouldn’t make – something like that hasn’t happened to me in years. On the other hand, it is better to experience it here than at the Giro,” Roman admitted after the stage in which the riders had to cope with the snowfall towards its end and temperature dropping below zero atop Passo Pordoi. “At the feed zone the organizers decided that we would ride up there. It was really cold but luckily for us, it started snowing shortly before the finish, so it was bearable.”The overall result was no big deal for him. “It doesn’t matter whether I finish fourth or sixth. I´m leaving the Trentino with good feelings because I´m in better shape than I was last year,” Roman added. He is staying in Italy over the weekend and has decided to skip the Liege-Bastogne-Liege classic. “I´ll take a breather and I´m off to the Romandy on Monday.”
