Stomach bug marred Roman´s hopes for success in France

“I had a slight temperature and stomach problems on Friday. Since the Friday´s breakfast I´d eaten hardly anything so it stands to reason that I lacked power today. I agreed with the team doctor and sports director that I would give it a go today but I wouldn’t go into red. The team management made the decision not to go on in the race. They said that it would be better not to finish the stage and keep my condition for next races. I pulled out before the hard climbs came. I was too wasted to carry on,” said Roman who abandoned about 26km to go.“On one hand, I feel bad about it because it had a feeling I stood a chance for a favorable result but on the other hand, I have to look ahead. This race wasn’t definitely the most important in my season, my primary objectives lie anywhere else.”He claims that food poising didn’t cause his stomach problems. “I think I was a sort of a stomach bug that I might have caught during the sudden transfer from the warm to the cold weather. I´m not the only one who suffers from this kind of ailment,” he revealed. In agreement with the team doctor, he is going to stay in France under medical surveillance until tomorrow. “It is better this way. Tomorrow I will move back to Italy where I will stay until the next races. I believe to get myself together soon and hopefully there won´t be any changes in my racing program.”
